FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
CLASSIFICATION: Personnel System - Requires completion of a six month probationary period
PAY GRADE: 110
SAFETY SENSITIVE: Yes - CDL Subject to random drug testing per the Athens-Clarke County Drug and Alcohol Ordinance
Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to perform various maintenance and custodial tasks for the Athens Transit Department. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to performing preventive and corrective maintenance on fleet support equipment, operating equipment, and performing additional tasks as assigned.
Job Related Requirements
Work Schedule Monday Thru Friday 2:30PM - 11:00PM (40 Hours per week)
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by Transit Maintenance Plan and ACC's safe driving policy.
Adherence to pathogen transmission prevention procedures and the utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce/eliminate exposure to pathogens and chemicals is required.
Emergency Position
This position is designated as an emergency position that requires your attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions. Some examples of emergencies include inclement weather, utility failure, fire or other forced evacuations or as determined by the Manager.

Minimum Training & Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

High school diploma or equivalent and six months of transit bus servicing and detailing equipment or related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must possess or be able to obtain a Class B Georgia Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement within 6 months of hire date.

Essential Duties, Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Fuels all transit buses, specialized handicap vans, and support vehicles daily; drains air tanks, checks and adds fluids and oil, and checks tire pressure, battery water level.
Cleans transit vehicles' seats, driver's area, fare boxes, windows, etc.; sweeps and mops interior of vehicles.
Drives vehicles through bus wash; washes wheels, lower panels, fender wells, and air-conditioning grills by hand.
Answers requests for road call assistance and performs road calls immediately in the event of vehicle failures, including buses of all types, cars, trucks, and vans in order to decrease repair disruptions and increase repair productivity.
Cleans and maintains the Multimodal Center and Operations and Maintenance facility on a pre-set hourly interval in compliance with the special procedures that have been developed by management to reduce the transmission of viral and bacterial infections.
Disperses sanitizing agents from an electro-static sprayer on a scheduled interval and as needed during potential pathogen exposures while utilizing all of the proper PPE to protect themselves from pathogen and chemical exposure.
Maintains a clean work area; cleans maintenance shop area, services area, and grounds; sweeps and cleans bays, rinses floors and uses scrubbing machine as needed.
Assists Transit Vehicle Technicians with vehicle diagnostics and repairs as needed.
Performs vehicle road calls, delivering vehicles safely back to transit garage.
Performs bi-annual parts inventory count and assist parts department with stocking, parts pick up, and delivery as needed.
Drives vehicles into garage bays to be serviced or repaired.
Performs a detailed cleaning on the interior and exterior of all department vehicles; steam cleans engines, radiators, battery terminals, and engine compartment door.
Reports any defects found when servicing vehicles to supervisor.
Closes up service island, secures shop doors, dispatcher's office, and pedestrian gate; turns off lights, and properly shuts down air-conditioning and all other equipment.
Repairs tires, regrooves and changes tires as required.
Performs preventive maintenance and necessary repairs on bus washer, commercial vacuum system, street sweeper, floor scrubber, parts washer, tire maintenance equipment, commercial pressure washer, generator, backpack blower, shop air dryer, hydraulic platform trailer and fuel tank testing systems
Operates a 2.5 ton compactor sanitation truck to remove waste from all of the bus stops in Athens Clarke County.
Performs inspections and light maintenance of the sanitation truck.
Completes trash can receptacle service and truck maintenance documentation in order to track the maintenance & services completed.
Tows a trailer and equipment to all bus stops within the county to perform steam pressure washing of each stop on a scheduled interval. Maintains all pressure washing equipment which entails scheduled services, fluid checks, and light maintenance on the truck, trailer, pressure washer and detergent container. Documents each bus stop serviced and the maintenance required to keep the pressure washing equipment in a state of good repair.
Assists in training new employees.
Maintains inventory of janitorial and vehicle cleaning supplies.
May be required to assist with security as necessary.
Assigns task to community service workers and provide them with supervision. Reports community service worker hours completed and individual productivity status to probation officers.
Repairs bus stop seating and signage.
Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies, procedures and activities of the Transit Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Transit Maintenance Worker I.
Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
Knowledge of building, grounds and custodial maintenance methods and practices, departmental rules, regulations, and various cleaning chemical and procedures as required in the performance of daily duties.
Ability to review manufactures service manuals to diagnose and repair fleet support equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members.
Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.
Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.
Ability to operate specialized cleaning equipment and various hand tools.
Ability to operate department motor vehicles, lawn mower, weed-eater, landscaping and plumbing tools and equipment, two-way radio, and construction equipment.

(ADA) MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a fuel pump, tire groover, computer tire balancing machine, tire changer, other department support equipment, and all department vehicles (e.g., mainline busses, vans, etc.). Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion. Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of heavy work.

Requires the ability to prepare invoices, incident reports, community service sheets, and work and equipment logs using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to groups of people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
