POSITION OVERVIEW Ascend Performance Materials is the premium provider of high quality chemicals, fibers and plastics. Ascend has global sales and distribution with five manufacturing facilities in the United States. Primary responsibility of the Project Manager is to safely deliver multiple capital projects within schedule, budget, and quality requirements. The scope of this role includes safety, client interface, budgets, schedules, and change management. This role is responsible for directing and coordinating the preparation of funding authorization request documents as well as leading engineering, procurement, and cost control as part of an integrated project team. As a key member of the Site Project Engineering Team, the Project Manager will have project leadership accountability and ownership for capital project execution from concept to post closure audit. A key success component is integrating the contributions of all major constituencies including Process Technology & Engineering, Operations, ESSH, Procurement, Project Design & Engineering and Construction needed to create reliable and minimum total cost at best speed. The role develops and maintains professional working relationships with executive management, construction management, ESSH, specialized engineering, project controls, finance, contract administration, purchasing, and the business. TARGETED OUTCOMES Develop collaborative working relationship with business and functional management to drive the most efficient execution processes possible for all projects Design, put into practice, and lead as an advocate and champion the use of best value work processes for all aspects of project execution based on project size and complexity. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership and project team management Leads multi-discipline teams of 5 to 15 people including engineers, designers, technical, process, production, manufacturing, construction, reliability, procurement, project controls personnel. Responsible for multiple projects, quantity dependent on size and complexity of portfolio Processes Lead conceptual project development, front-end engineering, detailed design, and construction, continuing through commissioning and post startup project analysis. Accountable for project development, planning, design development, and execution, including support to scope of work. Develop project execution plans with focus on scope, cost, schedule, risk management, engineering, procurement, and construction. Work cross-functionally with groups to ensure all aspects of the project are properly considered, including safety, environmental, construction, operations, and reliability Communicate effectively and recognize opportunities for value creation and improvements Manage multiple projects in various phases, including turnaround, and special projects. Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, utilizing engineering specifications, process flows, and other information to understand team expectation on tasks, roles, and responsibilities during life of project. Coordinate and manage requirements for process safety, reliability, maintenance, construction estimates, field work and operability; ensure alignment with environmental permitting, contracts and licensing agreements, and new technology agreements with external stakeholders. Coordinate startup activities and project commissioning with operations, closing project ensuring integrity in lessons learned and adequate documentation. Works with the business team and functional groups to identify project scope alternatives that offer the most creative solutions to solve a business need which has been identified though the stage gate process. Directs technical and administrative effort required to accomplish unit support & small project requirements in accordance with scope, design concept, design criteria, standard operating procedures, safety, schedule, and budgets. Directs actions required to ensure project Safety, Process Design Package and Scope development and documentation including preparation of funding authorization documents. Accountable for the development of the engineering design, estimating, procurement, construction, and field productivity strategies that reflect industry best practices. Works closely with Ascend Site engineering and maintenance groups to leverage Ascend equipment and people resources and accountable to interface with ESSH department as necessary. Aligns project teams with project deliverables and goals and ensures that the project team stays aligned around these deliverables and goals. Ensures that detailed project cost and schedule controls are established to track progress on project commitments and progress reports are communicated. Works to establish a project management of change procedure for the project and sees that it is strictly adhered to after project approval. Ensures that the project start-up team is organized during the front-end process and that roles and responsibilities are clearly identified. Ensures that the start-up plan is developed as part of the detail design engineering process. Responsible for setting high expectations and holding accountable suppliers and 3rd party engineering execution Ensures project closure and final asset settlement is completed in a timely manner. Establishes the team communication structure, including electronic tools, meetings, decision criteria, and roles and responsibilities for each team member. Manages and issues estimates during the various phases of the engineering cycle. Reports on status to Ascend key stakeholders via written reports and face-to-face reviews. Reviews and approves requests for change orders for review and submits them to the management team. TEAM Reports to: Project Engineering Manager REQUIRED EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Mechanical/Electrical Technology with at least 15 years of chemical or petro-chemicals industry experience Minimum 10 years’ experience managing Capital Projects and the Capital Project Planning process Strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong influencing skills with those individuals/teams they do not directly supervise Proactive leadership, change management and team building skills and experience. Excellent organization skills. Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. A broad understanding and relevant experience of technology and manufacturing processes and systems are essential to this position. Desired Certification Professional Project Manager certification an advantage REQUIRED SKILLS Strong sense of ownership and a drive to improve existing systems and processes by creative and innovative approaches. Proactive leadership and team-building skills with the ability to work effectively throughout the organization in a fast-paced matrix-structured reporting organization. Solid interpersonal and organizational skills with excellent verbal and written communication capabilities. Demonstrated strong root cause analytical and corrective action skills are a plus.
