Overview

You will work to develop new generations of sensing and real-time processing and actuation technologies in a fast-paced and exciting environment. As part of a small and dedicated team, you will be given immediate responsibility for designing, testing, and analyzing complex mechanical systems. You will frequently design, carry out, and analyze data from experiments to test energetic and optical components and systems. You will collaboratively develop designs from concept to production, with hands-on involvement to oversee parts fabrication, system assembly and validation testing along the way. Typical day-to-day work is done using CAD for design, Excel and Matlab to guide the design process or to analyze test data, and possibly simulation tools such as Autodyn or ABAQUS to design and refine experimental tests. Prototype part and test article fabrication often occurs in-house, with larger orders outsourced to local vendors under the engineer’s direct supervision. Once parts or systems become available, validation testing occurs on a regular basis at internal Artis facilities and at test facilities around the country.

  • Strong reasoning and math/science background
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong background in analytical tools such as Matlab, Excel, etc. required
  • Strong background designing and conducting experiments involving explosives, optics, and/or electrical systems preferred
  • Experience analyzing test data and/or simulation results required
  • Experience with ballistics/energetics instrumentation such as high-speed video and/or flash x-ray for data collection preferred
  • CAD experience required (Solidworks preferred)
  • FEA experience required (Solidworks Simulation preferred)
  • Simulation experience using tools such as Autodyn, ABAQUS, or LS-DYNA preferred
  • Experience with MIL-STDs and qualification testing preferred
  • Use of hand tools and measurement equipment required
  • Experience using basic fabrication equipment (mills, lathes, welders, etc.) preferred
  • GD&T experience a plus
  • Computer Skills: Should be comfortable with standard Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, etc.);

Work Environment

This position works in an office environment 60% of the time with remaining time spent in shop areas and indoor and outdoor testing areas.

Hybrid Work Policy

In addition to generous work hours flexibility, employee would be eligible to work remotely one day a week.

Position Type

This is a full-time position, non-exempt position.

Physical Demands

The employee occasionally is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance on a ladder at heights up to 10 ft. The employee will be required to work outdoors occasionally, in all weather conditions. The employee will be required to occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Travel

Travel may be required up to approximately 15% of the time.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5-plus years’ experience, or related degree and experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering with 3-plus years’ experience, or related degree and experience.

Security Clearance

An active security clearance or ability to obtain a clearance is required. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for security clearances.
