Job Summary

Arizona Country Club is a World Class Championship and Parkland style golf course set between the Papago buttes and the famed Camelback Mountain in the heart of downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Our 109-acre property has been known for being among the elite for extraordinary playing conditions, remarkable facilities, and a vision for fantastic membership experience.

As a part of the golf course agronomy staff, you will be part of a team that holds itself to the highest standard. We are able to perform mechanical and cultural functions necessary to achieve the best playing conditions in the Phoenix valley.

Not only did we host the original Phoenix Open every other year from 1955-1973 with PGA tour legends like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player, but we continue to evolve with advancements in performance and technology. While recognizing the rich, historical tradition here at Arizona Country Club, we continue to look for ways to go above and beyond.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to gain experience at a high-end golf facility and join a staff that has several years of experience in the industry. The position as an Assistant golf course superintendent will be helping with all daily operations, crew scheduling, participate in spray/fertility applications, as well helping led a crew of 25 employees. You will work in constant communication with the Director of Golf as well as Golf Course Superintendent.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 3 previous years of experience in a leading management role at a top private club
  • Two year Turfgrass Management Certificate at an accredited University
  • Pesticide and Spraying Applicator License
  • A demonstrated understanding of the culture and climate of the area

What Will I Be Doing?

  • Check identification of customers to verify age requirements for purchases of alcohol
  • Mix ingredients such as liquor, soda, sugar, and bitters, to prepare cocktails and other drinks
  • Serve snacks and food items to customers as required or applicable
  • Take beverage orders from serving staff as well as from patrons
  • Limit problems related to customers' excessive drinking by following procedures for intoxicated persons including but not limited to calling a taxi, refraining from serving more, etc
  • Control and monitor cash bank
  • Coordinate and control beverage inventory with Bar and Beverage Manager
  • Perform cleaning duties
  • Take orders; enter orders into point of sale system for transmittal to kitchen staff
  • Check with customers regularly to ensure they are enjoying their meal and take any necessary corrective actions to improve their visit
  • Serve food and beverage to members, prepare, or serve specialty dishes and beverages as required
  • Prepare checks itemizing the total meal cost including taxes and beverages
  • Remove dishes including glasses, plates, silverware, and barware from the bar area and place them in the kitchen and bar cleaning areas
  • Maintain kitchen and dining work areas, equipment, and utensils in clean and orderly condition
  • Present menus to members and answer questions about menu items, making recommendations upon request. Inform customers of daily specials as applicable
  • Support country club as needed doing training, serving, and other duties as assigned
  • Special projects as assigned by management

Responsibilities and expectations will include the following:

Skills:

  • Pesticide chemical/fertilizer calibration and application
  • Water management of greens, tees, fairways, and roughs
  • Assist in planning and supervising the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, and roughs
  • Helps with training and supervising employees and the use of their equipment
  • Emphasis on being a great operator to aid in employee training

Required Experience?

Minimum five years golf maintenance experience. Experience with chemical/fertilizer applications, irrigation repair, and crew management is a plus. Willing to train the right individual.

Required Education?

Qualified personnel will have a two or four-year degree in a Turfgrass Management or related field. Recent graduates encouraged to apply. Ability to obtain Arizona pesticide license.

Required Skills?

Good contact skills. Able to interact successfully with a variety of people in person and by telephone. Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as memorization skills in retaining information.

Physical Requirements ?

The ability to communicate in both written and spoken English so that others will understand. Must be able to lift materials including weights up to 50 lbs. Maintaining the grounds requires bending, stooping, and movement of the arms and legs. Must be able to multi-task during operating hours and complete tasks quickly and efficiently.

Working Conditions

Must be able to work in dark, light, wet, warm, windy, and/or rainy conditions. Must be able to see and work with members and work in an open area with other employees. The employee will come in contact with chemicals and fertilizers frequently. The employee will also be exposed to outdoor temperatures ranging from 35 degrees to 120 degrees while completing required tasks.
