Director, Capital Formation and Investor Relations

The Role

This individual will be responsible for covering new relationship development and account management of a16z limited partners (“LP”) in a primary geography. At scale, we anticipate hiring a coverage person for some combination of each of North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The coverage person will also have a primary alignment with one/more of a16z vertical funds – e.g., Seed, Venture, Crypto, Bio Health, Games, Growth.

The a16z Investor Relations (“IR”) team is dedicated to crafting an outstanding client experience for our LPs. The individual will report to the Head of Investor Relations and will also work across the firm’s investment professionals, operating groups, finance, legal and compliance team members in coordinating the capital formation and investor relations activities of Andreessen Horowitz.

To join our team, you should be excited to:

  • Prioritize and develop new potential LP relationships
  • Maintain and enhance existing LP relationships, including appropriate reporting and IRL/online events
  • Lead and manage an end-to-end fundraise for their primary fund family including:
    • Coordinate meetings with investors and follow up requests
    • Due diligence requests in a timely fashion
    • Manage LP closing process with outside counsel on the LPA and other legal requests
  • Work with the Operations team to manage financial reporting and other strategic engagement with the primary fund family outside of fundraises including investor presentations, annual investor meeting and other investor related events
  • Partner with the other coverage members to ensure that limited partners engage holistically with the broad array of a16z vertical funds
  • Leverage data to enable practical insights on our portfolio and the industry
    • Provide firm leadership and team members with insight to important investor developments and changes in investment appetite and buying behavior, news and other information, which might factor into the firm’s overall marketing and business strategy
    • Work with our Strategy Planning & Analytics team to build dashboards that provide key insights to our LPs on fund and investment performance including projected exit scenarios, liquidity and follow-on decisions
    • Develop strong fluency with the firm’s portfolio company information database and be able to manipulate and analyze data from the system to draw insights
  • Build and manage a team of associates, as needed, to ensure appropriate market coverage of the target limited partner universe

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate must bring a high level of ethical, intellectual, professional and personal values to our team including:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of direct experience in working in long-duration, alternative strategies with primary capital raising/account management relationship with limited partners (venture experience not specifically required)
  • Demonstrated experience in marketing a complex portfolio and interfacing directly with limited partners to represent the portfolio, business strategy, valuations, etc., of a fund
  • Success in raising capital from institutional LPs, in all channels and all regions, including endowments, foundations, swfs, insurance companies, public pension funds, consultants, family offices, retail platforms, etc.
  • Teamwork is a must – you will not “own” relationships in your geo or fund vertical, but rather will be the primary interface to them in interacting with all partners within the a16z universe
  • Demonstrated ability to work with senior General Partners on their fundraising and IR-related endeavors
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as a financial background to be able to explain financial performance to limited partners
  • Interest in (and ability) to, over time, grow and manage a team
  • Self professed data geek. Prior experience in financial modeling is strongly preferred
