Amherst County Government is Hiring a Communications Officer (Amherst, VA) Near Amherst, VA

The Communications Division of Amherst County Department of Public Safety is accepting applications for full-time Communications Officers. Duties include receiving emergent and non-emergent calls from the public, entering call data into a computer, and transmitting information to responding units, including EMS, fire, law enforcement, animal control, game warden, and more. The ability to assess the critical nature of calls and assist callers to the extent possible while maintaining contact with field units is key. The competitive applicant must be able to remain calm, speak clearly, hear and understand audio communications, and perform efficiently during stressful situations. The ability to multi-task and strong typing skills are a must. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to maintain confidentiality, as information received from calls, the courts, and other jurisdictions is secure in nature. The communications center operates 24/7/365. Entry-level positions typically begin as a night shift position, twelve-hour shifts from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am, 3-4 days per week. A high school diploma or equivalent, with two years of experience involving responsible public contact is required. The successful applicant must possess or complete within one year of employment the following: Basic Dispatch School, CPR and EMD certifications, and certification to operate and access NCIC/VCIN records. Applicant will be required to pass a criminal background check, drug and alcohol screening, and polygraph examination.
