The Vice President, Public Affairs, will play a key role in driving external communications with a focus on advancing American Express’ reputation as an innovative company and a workplace of choice for top technical talent, as well as supporting communications activities around emerging risks and crisis management preparedness. The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment; have a passion for and knowledge of technology capabilities, such as cloud and AI/machine learning; and be skilled at developing earned and owned strategies that showcase Amex’s innovative capabilities that support the company’s technology narrative.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement compelling strategies and campaigns to support the Technology organization’s objectives for external communications.
- Manage proactive and reactive media relations activities to demonstrate how technology is serving as a source of innovation to drive the company’s mission to provide differentiated products and services.
- Create and implement compelling thought leadership programs, social media content, and media campaigns.
- Build awareness of and visibility for American Express, create and execute proactive media strategies, and mitigate sensitive issues to protect the brand.
- Craft messaging for media interviews, external and internal presentations, and press releases.
- Elevate the digital presence and visibility of Technology executives and team members via social media and involvement in influential industry events and conferences.
- Partner with the internal engineering community to uncover stories to share in the American Express Newsroom and other external forums .
- Prepare presenters and spokespeople to participate in industry events and media opportunities.
- Serve as an external spokesperson and official company representative for the media and within authorized social media channels.
- Measure and track the success of public affairs programs and activities.
- Oversee agency partners supporting public affairs planning and execution.
Qualifications:
- 10 years of experience in a corporate or PR agency setting working in the technology sector
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience developing and implementing PR programs and social media strategies to support key business objectives of internal clients who deliver technology products and services
- Excellent judgment
- Experience leading crisis communications
- Strong analytical, strategic, and creative skills
- Strong relationship-building skills
- Experience managing agency and vendor resources
- Experience providing confident and persuasive counsel to clients
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment that encourages innovation and entrepreneurial thinking
- Understanding of the technology landscape, including emerging technologies.
- Proven ability to communicate complex technical topics to a variety of audiences, as well as the ability to quickly master new subject matter in a limited amount of time
- Proficient in the use of MS Office products, especially Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience required
Salary Range: $185,000.00 to $260,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
