American Coatings Association & PaintCare is Hiring a Counsel Near Washington, DC
Position Description
American Coatings Association (ACA) and its affiliate PaintCare Inc. seek a qualified attorney to join their in-house Legal Affairs division. The individual in this position will be responsible for addressing the varying legal needs of ACA and its affiliate organizations, most chiefly, PaintCare. PaintCare operates a product stewardship program responsible for the post-consumer collection, recycling, and disposal of post-consumer paint products. Occasional travel (5-10% of time) is required.
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Drafting and negotiating complex contracts with PaintCare program partners, including municipal governments
- Reviewing, drafting, and negotiating various vendor and consulting agreements for ACA and PaintCare
- Providing legal support to PaintCare field staff to support program operations
- Conducting legal research and analysis, including in the fields of commercial contracts, environmental law (solid and hazardous waste regulation and transportation), non-profit law, and antitrust
- Various other duties to support the legal needs of ACA and PaintCare
Skills and Qualifications
- J.D. from ABA-accredited law school
- Active bar membership in at least one jurisdiction with eligibility to practice as in-house counsel in the District of Columbia
- At least three years of legal experience (in-house experience preferred), with at least two years significant contract drafting and negotiation experience
- Knowledge of one or more of the following is a plus:
- environmental law and regulation (solid and hazardous waste regulation is a strong plus)
- product stewardship issues
- the paint and coatings industry
- non-profit organizations (trade associations is a strong plus)
- negotiating contracts with state and local governments
- antitrust law
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities for multiple stakeholders and to manage client relationships without undue supervision

Location
This position is located at ACA headquarters in Washington, DC. ACA has a hybrid work environment, where staff spend days both onsite and working remotely each week.
