American Civil Liberties Union is Hiring a Senior Product Designer Near New York, NY

ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Senior Product Designer in the Product and Technology Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York, NY. 

The ACLU’s Product & Technology team partners with departments across the ACLU in order to build and maintain innovative, robust and secure digital products and technical systems that accelerate the ACLU’s mission as our nationwide guardian of rights and liberties. We are a team of engineers, designers, product managers and administrators who take pride in creating technical solutions that help raise money, get our message out in the world, mobilize our supporters and manage our data with integrity.

Reporting to the Director of Product Management & Product Design, the Senior Product Designer works closely with their product team to design digital experiences that educate, inform, and inspire ACLU audiences to engage with the ACLU and take action. The Senior Product Designer is a highly proficient and autonomous design leader with a consistent positive impact on their team and domain. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with stakeholders to understand goals and requirements through a user-centric mindset
  • Work closely with other with product manager to product objectives and engineering constraints to guide design exploration while championing an optimal user experience
  • Independently responsible for the entire end-to-end design lifecycle, including research, a wide range of solution explorations, and solution validation
  • Drives strong product decision-making through wide-ranging solution exploration and strong rationale aligned to strong hypotheses, user psychology, or existing data 
  • Leads workshops or contributes to product discussions to help build consensus on strategy and feature decisions
  • Design user interfaces through wireframes, mockups, and prototypes, and map out information architecture and user flows for high-impact problems across the product portfolio range, balancing technical trade-offs to design the most effective solutions 
  • Conduct user research to explore opportunities, evaluate usability, and contextualize quantitative data about user behavior
  • Uses the right level of design fidelity to solicit feedback from immediate team, stakeholders, and external users 
  • Familiar with extending brand guidelines to standardized components and new interactive experiences on web and mobile
  • Works effectively with colleagues, demonstrating familiarity with decision-making frameworks and conflict resolution tactics
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work, embedding the values in program development, policy application, and organizational practices and processes 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the ACLU 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts 

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong portfolio reflecting experience successfully creating and shipping work, with your role clearly defined in each project 
  • Strategic problem-solving skills and the capacity to distill complex information into meaningful concepts, ideas, and designs
  • Experience collaborating with other designers, giving and accepting constructive criticism
  • Comfortable presenting work to stakeholders and building consensus with product team members
  • Fluent in visual design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, or Figma
  • Strong foundation in visual design, user experience, and systems design
  • Deep understanding of responsive web design, web standards, accessibility best practices
  • A positive attitude, open and adaptable, and passionate about good user experience

COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $143,943 (Level E). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
