Summary of position

The Communications Coordinator advances the ACLU of Colorado’s strategic priorities by effectively assisting with communications tactics in the affiliates core issue areas including criminal legal reform, privacy and personal liberty, voting, and housing security. This position requires excellent skills in writing and editing; a strong command of social media management; planning and fulfilling content distribution, proficiency in design; and is highly organized and data driven. The Communications Coordinator sits in the affiliate’s Communications Department and is responsible for helping to ensure advocacy campaigns stay on a pathway to victory by working with a multi-disciplinary team including litigators, organizers, policy strategists, and analysts. This position reports directly to the Director of Communications. The ACLU of Colorado is a fast-paced and ever-evolving environment and requires the ability to multitask effectively and complete tasks individually as well as in a team.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support the work of the communications department.
  • Work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team as a dedicated communications representative on advocacy campaigns that are aligned with and supported by strategic communications, policy, litigation, organizing, electoral programs, and other strategies and
  • Act as an issue area messaging expert in one or more of the following areas; criminal legal reform, privacy and personal liberty, voting, housing security or similar issues.
  • Generate web traffic, email, and social media audience engagement and growth by creating and implementing short- and long-term digital communications strategies.
  • Coordinate across ACLU departments and campaigns to execute tactics for mobilization of members and advocacy programs; and external distribution including website, social media platforms, newsletters, and press releases.
  • Maintain internal communications tools including a comprehensive content calendar, contact management, media monitoring platforms, and asset libraries.
  • Coordinate cross departmental rapid-response communications including real-time organizational coverage of campaign updates, legislative testimony, and field events as needed.
  • Draft and copy-edit a range of documents including newsletter content, major reports, advocacy and fundraising communications, and other communication assets as needed.
  • Ensure consistent, clear messaging that represents the ACLU of Colorado and its positions compellingly and convincingly.
  • Monitor social media channels for opportunities to engage.
  • Design graphics using ACLU of Colorado templates for use on digital platforms.
  • Develop dynamic content for the organization’s websites, and social media channels.
  • In consultation with the Director of Communications, determine ideal channels and tactics for distributing content, promoting advocacy campaigns, publicizing events, and making civil liberties accessible and relevant to communities statewide.
  • Cultivate and steward key strategic relationships with community storytellers, stakeholders, and communications peers at partner organizations.
  • Promote and be an integral part of ACLU of Colorado’s commitment to a diverse, inclusive, and equitable community.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum three years of relevant experience in communications.
  • Exceptional understanding of social media management, processes, and techniques for membership development, mobilization, and list building.
  • Superb writing, storytelling, and copy-editing skills; and an ability to translate complex ideas into understandable messages that inform and engage audiences.
  • A keen eye for design, page layout, typography, and brand management.
  • Superb organization skills with an ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment while managing several projects on tight deadlines simultaneously and adjusting to frequently shifting priorities;
  • A profound and well-articulated commitment to civil liberties and the mission of the ACLU; and an understanding of the range ACLU issues.
  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through, demonstrated ability to solve problems, ability to meet tight deadlines, and manage resources effectively.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Airtable, media monitoring tools, social media management tools, and other web-based platforms as needed.
  • Effective and proven team process and project management experience.
  • A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values individuals and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstance, and the ability to work with diverse individuals within the organization and broader community.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
  • Team player who inspires collaboration, lifts up the work of others and maintains balance and perspective with patience and a sense of humor.

Work Accommodations during the COVID-19 Pandemic

To ensure the safety of our employees, the ACLU of Colorado implemented a mandatory work-from-home policy. While the policy stays in effect, we acknowledge that there are special circumstances when working at the office is necessary. For these situations, we ask staff to send notifications of their time in the office and to follow CDC precautionary measures to ensure staff safety. We are preparing a hybrid work accommodation in June 2022. It is mandatory to send a vaccination record or request a medical or religious exemption to return to the office.

Compensation and Benefits

This position is full-time; the approximate salary range is $49,000 - $57,000 and within the pay scale parameters of ACLU of Colorado. Benefits include medical and dental insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, 401k contribution, paid vacation, and holidays. In addition, ACLU-CO provides mental health services to its employees. A relocation stipend is available for new hires to move to Colorado.
