Summary:

The primary responsibility for this position is to produce hospital-specific, semi-annual quality benchmarking reports, and to design and conduct clinical research studies supporting the quality-program and grant-based research portfolio of the CQI statistical team. Work involves providing statistical guidance (orally and in writing), evaluating data integrity, constructing statistical models for predictive purposes, and reporting results in different formats appropriate for participating hospitals, program leadership/staff/surgeon consultants, and research investigators.

This Exempt level position will report to the Statistical Manager, Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) in the Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care. The selected candidate will become a member of a mutually-supportive team of ten statisticians who are responsible for providing benchmarking and clinical research support to many College programs and funded projects included NSQIP Adult, NSQIP Pediatric, and MBSAQIP. It is based in our Chicago office and is a hybrid role: 3 days per week in the office/2 days per week remote.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Analyze data for risk-adjusted semi-annual benchmarking reports delivered to each hospital. Evaluate data integrity on an ongoing basis; determine whether data are consistent with expectations and whether specifications or data collection processes need to be changed.
  • Maintain risk calculators by updating model parameters as data are accrued.
  • Provide statistical guidance and serve as a statistical advisor on various clinical research and pilot projects.
  • Write sections of reports and manuscripts dealing with statistical methods and results. Consult with project leadership in providing valid and reliable study conclusions.
  • Collaborate with other members of the CQI statistical team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university required in biostatistics/statistics, health research/analytics, social sciences, epidemiology, or related field.
  • Professional work experience (2 years), especially with large health/medical datasets, is preferred, but not required.
  • Significant skill and experience in cleaning/validating/manipulating large, complex datasets using SAS STAT and SAS macro language is essential; familiarity with SAS SQL is a plus. The candidate should have broad experience in statistical analysis, including logistic and hierarchical modeling using SAS PROCs, general biomedical research design, and have the ability to apply statistical theory to new problems.
  • Excellent oral communication skills are required, including the ability to convey biostatistical principles to colleagues with varying functional specialties and backgrounds, and to negotiate on design features of reports and construction of timelines, goals, and milestones. Excellent written communication skills including grammatical/technical writing skills.
  • Capable of providing excellent customer service. Ability to establish strong working relationships with leadership and staff associated with the College’s registries.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills. Must be able to multi-task and have the ability to plan and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Display high level of energy and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and as a member of a team.
