ALASKA VILLAGE ELECTRIC COOP is Hiring a GL Accountant Near Anchorage, AK

About the utility cooperative:

The utility cooperative is a growing organization that provides electricity to nearly 60 villages across rural Alaska. We do what it takes to keep the lights on and bring power to the communities that depend on our services.

About the role:

The Accountant reports to the Controller and provides accounting support to ensure adequate internal controls and efficiency of procedures and processes within the Accounting department.

What you will do:

  • Maintain complete and accurate fixed asset records for the Cooperative in accordance with generally acceptable accounting standards and company policy.
  • Support month-end close and account analysis. Responsible for detail account analysis, journal entries, G/L account reconciliations, account roll-forward, and system balancing.
  • Organize and review a variety of financial data, reporting it in a way that is useful and understandable.
  • Ensures that Cooperative policies are being applied.
  • Engages coworkers at all levels where appropriate to identify and explain proper accounting treatment for business transactions.
  • Collects schedules and reports from other departments for month-end reporting requirements.
  • Prepares and posts recurring and fixed journal entries, reviews journal entries prepared by others, and ensures appropriate backup is prepared for all journal entries as a key internal control.
  • Participates in the Review group with Controller and CFO which includes reviewing invoice packets and request for payment to support for accuracy and completeness, identify errors, coach AP Clerk on accounting policies and procedures in accordance with GAAP, and authorizing payment disbursement (authorizing ACH and signing checks).
  • Reviews trip expense reports and calculate per diem amounts for accuracy and completeness.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in use of core financial systems and assists with conversion and implementation of new software.
  • Must be able to demonstrate active knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in daily execution of accounting functions and tasks.
  • Implement policy/process changes and chart of account standardizations and bring suggestions for process improvements to the attention of Controller or CFO.
  • Process/review data input for reasonableness and accuracy with respect to prior year, current budget, and trends.
  • Provide back-up to Accounting Specialist and Controller, as needed.

What makes you a good fit:

  • Education: BA/BS required. Specialty/Major: Accounting, Finance or related discipline and 3 years of experience as an Accountant is required.
  • License: Driver's license with an acceptable driving record for insurance at normal rates is required.
  • Other: Ability to work in office in Anchorage, Alaska.

The working environment you can expect: Our office in Anchorage is located at 4831 Eagle Street with off-street parking and a view of the mountains. We offer flexibility in start/end time between 7am-5:00pm. This is full time, in-person work.
