Alakaina Family of Companies is Hiring a Histology Technologist Near Fort Detrick, MD

The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies (FOCs) is looking for a qualified Histology Technologist to provide scientific support for our government customer in Ft. Detrick, Maryland.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support pathology and histology services in the following major areas of research:

  • Assist with necropsies of various animal species including rodents and nonhuman primates in high-containment/biosafety level (BSL-4).
  • Support BSL-4 (necropsy) and full-service BSL-2 (histopathology and electron microscopy) laboratory operations as needed, including standard laboratory maintenance, biohazardous waste handling, supply inventory and ordering, materials preparation, and LIMS data management.
  • Fulfil on-call requirements for evening/weekend/holiday as needed for necropsy support or other duties as required by the contract.
  • Perform processing, embedding, microtomy, standard hematoxylin and eosin staining of tissue sections, a myriad of special histochemical stains, immunohistochemical stains using chromogenic or fluorescent labels, novel in situ hybridization stains, and digital slide scanning.
  • Perform a variety of specialized embedding and processing techniques for both transmission and scanning electron microscopy as needed.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Must have Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Science.
  • Must be willing to obtain HT/HTL Certification via ASCP. 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have two (2) or more years of experience in a histology laboratory providing expert histopathology services including: gross and microscopic tissue examination and dissection, processing, embedding, microtomy, routine H&E staining, and routine histochemistry.
  • Must have experience in necropsy, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, sample preparation techniques for electron microscopy, working with viral select agents, and Good Laboratory Practice.
  • Must exhibit willingness to work under BSL-3/BSL-4 conditions with fitted respiratory protection/positive pressure protective suit.
  • Must show organization, reliability, attention to detail, and proficient verbal/written communication skills.
  • Must be competent with of Microsoft Office and understand laboratory information management systems.
  • Must be capable of working as part of a team and independently and must be flexible for on-call shifts.
  • Must be willing to be immunized with licensed and FDA approved Investigational New Drugs (IND) as recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents.
  • Must be willing to participate in periodic drug screening.

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must have the ability to obtain/maintain DOJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.
  • Must have the ability to obtain/maintain certification in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program.
  • Must have the ability to obtain/maintain CDC Select Agent Program approval.
