POSITION TITLE: Regional Director, New England Regional Office

REPORTS TO: VP, Northeast Division SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Regional staff LOCATION: Boston, MA. 

Grade/Class: Grade K, Exempt, Non-Union

PRIMARY FUNCTION: 

Plan and execute the direction and administration of all regional office activities, including fundraising, program delivery, leadership development, communications, government relations, fact-finding/research and office management to advance ADL’s mission within the region. Represent ADL in the community, to the media and to public officials. Manage, engage, and develop regional board, committees and staff. Report to and communicate regularly with Northeast Divisional colleagues and the Regional Operations team in the national office (i.e., the Community Support Center or “CSC”). 

The ADL New England Regional Office serves Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and s known for being the leading voice on antisemitism and hate and has a proven record of accomplishment for advocating ADL priorities in multiple state capitals across the region. The Region supports a multi-faceted educational, community relations, and legal approach to combat anti-Semitism and hate of all kinds, promote diversity, and build bridges of understanding between communities. The New England office is comprised of fourteen staff members, as well as an active regional board and associate board comprised of young leaders. 

For decades, the region has developed innovative programs that have been replicated across the country spanning the areas of civil rights, education, interfaith, community outreach, and law enforcement. Examples of programming include innovative anti-bias and antisemitism educational programming for educators, students, parents and community leaders, law enforcement personnel training on issues of hate crimes, extremism, and domestic terrorism, and outreach programming and initiatives including partnerships with statewide community organizations.

Responsibilities

Primary:  

  • Strategize and direct the implementation of ADL programs and policies tailored to local community needs and issues. These include outreach, programs (e.g., conferences and education/training) and legislative networking.
  • Lead regional fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Director of Development by developing and then executing the strategy to grow revenue and meet regional goals. Develop and implement strategies to meet campaign goals and grow support base through board campaign, regional and national events, identifying and soliciting institutional and corporate donors, direct mail, and donor prospecting. Cultivate key donor relationships and directly solicit major donors, including for special campaigns, and cultivate planned giving donors.
  • Serve as the public voice of ADL across the region by speaking and appearing in multiple public forums to promote public awareness of ADL’s mission, work and programs. Respond to inquiries from the media and from members of the public, demonstrating authoritative knowledge of ADL’s policies and positions as relevant to local, national and world events. Read, monitor and respond to media reports and opinion articles. Write and/or edit press releases, opinion pieces and social media posts on local issues in a manner consistent with ADL’s policies and principles.
  • Recruit, engage, develop and retain superior staff talent in the region. Develop and maintain a culture that is consistent with ADL’s values and brings out the best in people, allowing them to perform at the highest possible level.
  • Recruit, engage and work with volunteer leaders (i.e., “lay leaders”) to support the revenue goals and activities of the region. Establish guidelines for including volunteer leaders in regional activities and advisory boards, staff committees and create appropriate training opportunities to ensure the effectiveness of lay leaders.
  • Promote visibility and leadership of ADL in the community. Establish and maintain working relationships with appropriate community institutions and leaders, the Jewish community, legislators and government officials, media representatives, law enforcement personnel, and ethnic and interfaith group leaders.
  • Develop and implement community outreach, including initiatives and joint ventures with elected leaders and diverse interfaith and cross-cultural organizations active within the region e.g., African American, Hispanic/Latino groups, Muslim, Catholic and Christian leaders.
  • Collaborate and strategize with Division colleagues and promote intra-Divisional collaboration and support by regional staff. Create opportunities for intra-Divisional multi-Region fundraising, programming and sharing of best practices. Cultivate a culture of cooperation and collaboration.
  • Oversee constituent services, ensuring complaints of discrimination or bias incidents are received and resolved timely and appropriately. In coordination with counsel, direct fact-finding activities and implement procedures for reporting results.
  • Participate in government affairs activities, maintaining regular contact with state, local and national officials. Advocate for ADL issues in state and local legislatures.
  • Monitor relevant civil rights lawsuits in the region and identify potential Amicus brief involvement. Keep the Civil Rights Area Counsel informed of developments.
  • In collaboration with the Regional Operations team, establish the regional operating budget and manage to both revenue and expense commitments.
  • Work with the national Community Support Center (CSC) to oversee management of the physical office space/lease. 
  • Implement New England Region Strategic Plan. 

Qualifications

Skills:  

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including public speaking; ability to represent complex and diverse issues in an articulate and compelling manner.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills; ability to work with a broad range of leaders and advocates and develop mutually beneficial relationships; ability to build coalitions and establish strategic partnerships; development and management of an engaged Board. 
  • Demonstrated experience leading successful fundraising efforts or similar business development or sales experience is strongly preferred.
  • Outstanding leadership ability and team building, managerial, supervisory and organizational skills. Effective and inspirational leader of others, not just an individual contributor. 
  • Ability to absorb and learn new information quickly (e.g., ADL policies and positions).
  • Proven diplomatic and conflict resolution skills. 
  • Ability to multi-task, handle a heavy workload and respond effectively to rapidly changing priorities.

Work Experience:  

  • Seven to ten years’ experience with some experience in a community relations/community service/nonprofit organization.
  • Track record of building relationships to create a collaborative work environment where staff are heard and where staff are motivated and inspired to perform at their highest levels with a culture of organizational accountability. 
  • Fundraising experience with an emphasis on major gifts (business development/sales experience could be an alternative), program development and volunteer relations.

Education:  

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. A graduate degree in nonprofit management, law, business, or a related field, is preferred. 

Work Environment:

  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary to represent ADL and to attend community events; travel within the region is required; occasional overnight travel is required. 
  • ADL COVID-19 Protocol (updated periodically): ADL is adhering to public health guidance regarding COVID-19. ADL will require that all employees are vaccinated with exceptions for medical and religious accommodations. ADL is requiring proof of vaccination. ADL is a hybrid environment; this role may require 2 days in the office.

Compensation: 

  • This position has a salary range of $156,000 to $210,000. This salary range is reflective of a position based in Boston, MA. Please note that actual salaries are commensurate with experience and reflect the budget for a given position, and since ADL has a location-based compensation structure, there may be a different range for candidates in other locations.
