The Director of Human Resources will report to the CEO and be primarily responsible for helping to understand and set the organization's overall strategic direction and business objectives, and develop the HR strategies and initiatives that support these goals. This position oversees all aspects of the HR team and HR functions within the multi-site organization, ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and fosters a positive and inclusive work environment that engages employees across the organization in the continuous improvement of our people, processes, and products.

Shoreline Fruit is based in beautiful Traverse City, Michigan and operates nearly 6,000 acres of cherry orchards right here in the state, growing and processing over 50 million pounds of Montmorency tart cherries each year. You will be joining a Team that cultivates, processes, markets, and sells the finest cherry and other premium fruit products in the world. What you will be doing:

Strategic HR Planning

  • Collaborates with Senior Leadership to understand, develop, and implement HR strategies that align with the organization's objectives, growth, and sustainability. Assess organizational structure and makes recommendations to provide clarity, transparency, and improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Talent Acquisition

  • Manages the effectiveness of the employee life cycle system.
  • Works closely with leadership to assess labor and talent gaps in the organization and leads recruitment efforts to attract and retain top talent including developing and deploying external sourcing strategies, developing a pipeline for internal candidates, conducting interviews, and overseeing the hiring and onboarding processes.
  • Manages the development and training processes for all employees in the organization, including those in leadership positions as well as those making things happen on the front lines.

Employee Relations

  • Sets HR strategies to promote an open culture of communication and teamwork.
  • Manages employee survey programs, stay interviews, and other methods to asses and support employee engagement and concerns, and to create actionable steps for improvement.
  • Assesses, develops, and utilizes effective communication channels to keep all employees and stakeholders updated and informed.
  • Serves as a trusted advisor to leadership and employees, providing guidance on HR policies, procedures, and best practices in a fair, consistent, and timely manner.

Performance Management

  • Manages the performance management systems to drive employee engagement and development, increase productivity, and help achieve organizational goals.
  • Provides coaching and support to managers on performance evaluations and employee feedback.

Training and Development

  • Identifies training needs and develops programs to enhance employee skills and competencies, maintain compliance with safety and other regulatory requirements, and maintain the learning management system.
  • Collaborates with leadership to create career development plans for high potential employees.

Compliance

  • Understands federal, state, and local labor regulations, employment laws, safety regulations, and other compliance regulations and ensures our business practices are ethical, legal, and compliant.

Employee Compensation and Benefits Administration

  • Plans, develops, and implements compensation programs, policies, and procedures to align with organizational goals and respond to changes in the economy, workforce, and state/federal law.

HR Metrics and Reporting

  • Analyzes HR data and trends to identify areas for improvement and make data-driven decisions and recommendations.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate and make changes in policy, practice, and resources.

Health and Safety

  • Collaborates with the Safety and Compliance Coordinator to develop and implement comprehensive safety policies and procedures that promote and apply safe behaviors, and ensures compliance with various legal and regulatory requirements related to workplace safety.

Budget

  • Develops and manages the HR and Safety departmental budgets including forecasting expenses, tracking expenditures, and identifying cost saving opportunities.
