As the HR Manager here at Addgene, you will help to define and manage the Addgenie experience. As the HR Manager you will take on a wide variety of responsibilities such as organizational design, employee experience, on/offboarding, benefits, compensation, recruiting, professional development, and compliance. You will manage our People Operations team (Specialist & Coordinator). You will also work collaboratively with our Sr. Director of HR to develop and implement programs that will create an environment of trust, inclusion, and engagement across Addgene.

This position will work out of our Watertown, Massachusetts Headquarters with an opportunity to work hybrid. Our beautiful office space has ample parking with a free shuttle from Harvard Square and is on multiple bus lines, with the cost of public transit covered by Addgene.

In joining our team as an “Addgenie”, you will work with multidisciplinary internal teams to help fulfill this mission, including scientists, software engineers and product developers, renowned customer support teams, marketing gurus, and business development professionals. Together, Addgenies create and enhance opportunities for research scientists to deposit their materials, find products and resources easily on our website, and receive unparalleled support in receiving and expertly using our materials in their own experiments. 

Addgene is a small non-profit of just over 100 employees with multiple team leads and people managers, and is now poised to grow and enhance its centralized HR function to remain a true “best place to work”.The HR Manager will report directly to the Senior Director of HR, manage a small team, and collaborate closely with Talent Acquisition to provide the best possible employee experience to all Addgenies.

To Succeed in this Role, You Will:

  • Consult, advise, and coach managers at all levels on ways to strengthen their teams’ effectiveness; drive effective coaching, and boost employee engagement
  • Work with managers and team leaders across a variety of multidisciplinary departments to ensure Addgenies have a substantially positive employee experience across the employee lifecycle, from onboarding to exit and beyond
  • Collect, analyze and present people data to Addgene’s key stakeholders that will inform opportunities to continuously improve employee engagement metrics. Examples include managing internal feedback mechanisms as well as conducting market research.
  • Identify and analyze root causes of work environment issues, managing solutions in collaboration and cooperation with key stakeholders
  • Identify learning and development programs designed to enable Addgenie growth
  • Oversee employee relations, including handling all performance issues as they arise
  • Recommend, develop, and implement employee policies
  • Manage, mentor, and support the People Operations Specialist and Coordinator, overseeing their daily workflow
  • Work with the Senior Director of HR to proactively identify best practice workflows and streamline processes to increase efficiency across all HR functions, including Talent Acquisition, Onboarding, and employee growth and development
  • Oversee administration of and participate in surveys regarding total rewards, including benefit plans and annual salary surveys
  • Manage immigration sponsorships/visas of applicable Addgenies
  • Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, new technology within the HR realm
  • Ensure compliance with city, state and federal regulations
  • Ensure all HR policies, practices, and procedures include a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lens

Skills and Competencies

  • 7 years of experience in human resources with at least 3 years of managing others
  • Functional expertise in employee experience, performance management, compensation, benefits, recruiting, employee development, employee relations, and employment law
  • Credible & savvy HR professional that will serve as a trusted advisor 
  • Strong desire to deliver excellent customer service to internal teams
  • Proactive, resourceful, creative problem solver with a collaborative team mindset
  • Agile and effectively prioritize work efficiently and delegate when appropriate, maintaining a meticulous level of detail in daily work
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and ability to build relationships and communicate respectfully at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to be involved at all levels, willing to roll up one’s sleeves
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Background in encouraging inclusion and a diverse culture
  • Ability to identify and recommend improvements in processes
  • Experience with HR analytics and data collection
  • Ability to deal with confidential information and all employee matters with diplomacy and discretion
  • Experience with HRIS systems, Applicant Tracking Systems, other HR platforms and Google drive
  • Knowledge of visa processes including H1-B, OPT, Green Card
  • Knowledge of all federal, state, and local employment laws
