Position Summary:
The Director of Engineering (DOE) is a fundamental and crucial position for ensuring the success and profitability of Applied Composite Technology Aerospace (ACTA) programs. The DOE role at ACTA begins with the proposal process and ends with successful completion of each contract. This position leads both the development and production engineering group, and ensures proper and clear handoff (through the successful readiness reviews) between the groups.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development engineering department in two, primary roles; support proposals with accurate and timely proposal labor and material estimating and lead on the engineering and planning phase of all new programs
  • Demonstrated strong leadership of the engineering department including the development, implementation and improvements of all manufacturing processes, tooling, controls, automation, and equipment to ensure best in class manufacturing processes are utilized for the company
  • Hold engineering department personnel accountable to specific improvement goals, and to develop and maintain suitable metrics and controls to monitor production efficiency
  • Maintain cost management of engineering department ensuring all labor, software, travel and other costs are managed at, or below budgets where applicable
  • Provides effective management tools to motivate and ensure full utilization of all engineering personnel and to ensure that all programs are adequately supported
  • Maintains a high level of competence, job skills and training which drives and supports the distinction between development and production engineering as well as for other functions in the department
  • Provide manufacturing insight and project deliverables to new or modified product projects and insure timely transition into manufacturing, with consideration to robust design, cost effectiveness, and ease of manufacturability
  • Develops and leads a disciplined process in readiness reviews on all programs that are to be transition from development to full scale production
  • Manage engineering department resources (personnel, equipment and software) to ensure resources are fully utilized and available to support ACTA’s programs
  • Ensure department compliance with all ACTA company policies and procedures
  • Manage effective product designs, when applicable using best in class manufacturing processes and materials that meet customer expectations and ensure the resultant product maximizes ACTA profits
  • Ensure engineering department has adept, trained and skilled workforce by actively assessing department needs and ensuring suitable training and career progression of engineering personnel
  • Responsible for ensuring that production planning and travelers are easily understood, clearly explained to reflect current practices, compliant with company and customer requirements, and are using adequate and effective documentation and result in repeatable and compliant product
  • Responsible for providing adequate engineering support to all production programs, which includes at a minimum ensuring that tooling and processes are highly effective, designing and conducting production trend tracking using key performance indicators (KPIs) for each program that allows proactive management of the tooling and processes as necessary to ensuring the most cost effective and efficient processes are used that result in minimal product scrap and maximum program profit
  • Creating an energizing work environment that supports ACTA’s high performance culture while ensuring an efficient and flexible organization
  • Ensures that engineering master estimates of labor, materials and product work flows are current and accurately reflected in ACTA’s ERP system
 
Knowledge, Skills & Requirements:
  • Prefer a Master’s degree (minimum) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent
  • Minimum ten years relevant experience in engineering leadership roles in an aerospace, manufacturing environment with focus on composites preferred
  • Experience with Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, breakthrough performance, high volume manufacturing preferred
  • Minimum five years’ experience and comprehensive knowledge of developing manufacturing procedures, developing tooling, developing manufacturing processes and a well-rounded cross section of standard aerospace industry materials and process experience
  • Minimum five years’ experience with management of engineering personnel of at least 10 people
  • Demonstrated success in driving continuous improvement into production manufacturing processes
  • Minimum of a Six Sigma Green Belt Certification with demonstrated experience in Six Sigma application
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, along with the ability to interface well with all levels of company management, shop floor and
  • Strong attention to detail, organized and self-motivated
  • Ability to manage multiple duties, set priorities and follow tasks through completion
  • Capable of working in an environment in which demands and priorities change frequently
 
Success Factors:
  • >98% on budget for labor and other department direct and indirect costs
  • >98% on time with all department program responsibilities
  • Production scrap (as measured by overall company revenue loss) ≤1.0%
  • Demonstration of accurate and current statistical process control on ≥80% of production programs
  • Demonstrated year-over-year production efficiency improvement of 5% labor reduction on 80% of all production programs
  • Alignment of engineering master to actual labor and BOM ≥98% accuracy
