The role is a poly skilled role so you can wear many hats from data analyst, designer, coder, and tester in the data engineering role so you can deliver high-quality solutions with velocity. You will work in an agile team with a data product owner and with business stories so you have a good understanding of the business value desired. This role will have the creativity/ freedom to work with the business on how to design and build the business solution with some architectural guidelines. A suitable background for this data engineering role is a current analytics solution builder, who has an IT background but may have also worked in a business department building analytical solutions directly for a business leader. The technical background is someone who is currently a big data engineer or maybe working on legacy technologies such as Hadoop, and other environments where strong SQL or other programming language skills has been developed. Nationwide offers extensive training to advance your skills from DataBricks and Python classes, and business training so you can advance your business and data expertise in a specific business domain like claims processing. A $5K tuition reimbursement is also offered after one year so you can take university classes in AI, ML, or other areas of interest. Job Description The Claims Data team which is responsible for producing the loss and associated expense data for the Nationwide Property and Casualty business is seeking a Principal Level Data Engineer. This role will lead, mentor, and assist team members in the software development lifecycle process from design, build, test, and run responsibilities. The position is the highest individual contributor level in the IT organization and the same level of Directors. The candidate will be joining a high-performing team that is passionate and motivated about meeting customer needs. The team size is approximately fifty individuals managed in three scrum teams with a range in skills from agile leaders, data engineers, requirements analysts, testers, and other roles. You will be working closely with your team, other domain principal engineers, data product owners, and leadership. Candidates will be expected to be between competent and master level capabilities in the following hard skill capabilities: Designing, building, and testing analytical pipelines Spark coding in PySpark and SQL including building and using generic frameworks Identifying and coding data quality and business transformations Building and re-using data tests for subsequent releases Delta tables with streaming pipelines from RDBMSs and APIs Spark internals for performance optimization including cluster and coding optimization Base AWS products including EC2 and S3, and configurations Security design and access controls using IAM Snowflake Production monitoring and defect resolution Capable of performing POCs to demonstrate the utility of new technology and practices Candidates will be expected to be between competent and master level capabilities in the following soft skill capabilities: Capable of influencing other technical leaders and teams to align to common practices, frameworks, and tool usage patterns. Capable of being proactive with business leadership on solution options and recommendations that address their requirements. Experience using Agile methodologies and creating good stories that complete a solution Capable of performing software engineering disciplines from design, build and testing. Capable of leading technical projects and decomposing work across team members. Ability to mentor and develop other data professionals so they can grow and advance. Comfortable dealing with ambiguity where you influence or drive the process Having experience in the areas below is a plus for the qualified candidate: Insurance business process and analytics expertise Claims business process and analytics expertise Working with commonly used data sources in the Insurance Industry from Guidewire, CCC, Xactimate and others that have dominant market share positions Working with AI and MIL technologies Reporting Relationships: Reports to AVP or above Data Leader. Typical Skills and Experiences: Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems, business, statistics, math, a related field or comparable experience and education strongly preferred. Graduate studies in business, statistics, math, computer science or a related field are a plus. License/Certification/Designation: Certifications are not required but encouraged. Experience: Ten or more years of relevant experience with database management, data centric applications. Extensive experience with software development on large projects/initiatives. Experience in structuring and leading complex analysis across one or more lines of business. Experience in working with large customers and/or prospect databases and sources. Three years’ experience with developing compelling stories and distinctive visualizations. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Data application and practices knowledge. Advanced skills with modern programming and scripting languages (e.g., SQL, R, Python, Spark, UNIX Shell scripting, Perl, or Ruby). Strong problem solving, oral and written communication skills. Ability to influence, build relationships, negotiate and present to senior leaders. Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
