Job Description Summary The Los Angeles Times seeks a managing editor brimming with intelligence, innovation, ambition and enthusiasm to oversee daily news coverage, multiple editorial departments and a slate of new initiatives that will both enhance and change the way the nation’s largest metro daily tells the Southern California story to those here and afar. Under new editorial leadership and committed family ownership, The Times is undergoing an exciting period of expansion, experimentation and rejuvenation unlike any in recent decades. We continue to produce and elevate the signature accountability, investigative and political reporting that has sustained us for 141 years, and are investing in advanced forms of storytelling, podcasting, video, analytics and social media. We are deepening our relationship with established audiences and connecting with new and diverse readers, listeners and viewers like never before. This managing editor will oversee California and Metro, the Washington bureau, Foreign and National, Politics and Business, as well as new initiatives. We need someone who can lead both the traditional journalism on which we built our Pulitzer Prize-winning foundation and help us develop and improve new forms of storytelling that drive conversations in the major cities, suburban tracts, rural communities and coastal enclaves of the nation’s most diverse and dynamic state. This individual will be one of three managing editors who work with the executive editor in a newsroom made up of more than 500 of the country’s best journalists. Many newsrooms are hierarchical, but we are looking for someone who will listen to and work with knowledgeable professionals at every level. The ideal candidate is a collaborator, not a top-down type, who will value an intern’s good idea as much as a veteran’s. They must have a listener’s ear for the 200-plus members of their team and some eight to 10 direct reports. Given our commitment to connecting with groups traditionally under-represented in media coverage, it is imperative that this editor possess a deep understanding of and a commitment to covering communities of color, the immigrant experience, those at all stations on the economic scale and others traditionally without voice in the halls of power, be they City Hall, Sacramento, Silicon Valley or Hollywood and beyond. For these reasons, this position requires a seasoned media executive and a capable manager who can help align the newsroom with the company’s overall editorial strategy and business goals. This job will require courage to tell stories in new ways and shake up newspaper industry norms and priorities. We need someone who can say no to things we’ve always done “just because” and yes to things we may be afraid to try. Still, many of the basics will apply. We demand impeccable news judgment, a commitment to the highest ethical standards, a passion for journalism and holding powers to account, as well as an optimism about the industry’s future. Responsibilities: Plan and manage daily news operations in collaboration with senior editors Work with the leadership team to set editorial ambitions, define coverage and develop stories Orchestrate, nurture and inspire creativity and innovation across platform Lead multiple large, complex projects and be a role model for interdisciplinary teams Collaborate with other departments such as Video, Audio, the Copy Desk and Design Cultivate positive morale and address issues that dampen it Help lead diversity efforts to build an inclusive staff that reflects the communities The Times serves Collaborate with data analysts to understand our audience and its needs and with product developers, interactive news designers and UX designers working to improve the digital experience of The Times Work with marketing, events, communications, public affairs, human resources and other departments outside editorial as needed Appear on TV and radio on behalf of the L.A. Times and represent the organization at conferences, seminars, professional meetings and employer-sponsored events Qualifications: A minimum of 15 years of experience, with at least 10 in management or comparable roles A track record of fostering teamwork Deep familiarity with newsgathering and journalistic forms, such as investigative, narrative, explanatory and breaking news Demonstrated ability to think strategically, as well as creatively Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills Significant experience in digital journalism An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace An impeccable moral compass, including a sensitivity to the ongoing transformations in how news is created, produced and consumed The Los Angeles Times was established in 1881 and restored to local private ownership in 2018.
