The Opportunity

WSP is currently seeking an Engagement Specialist/Junior Urban Planner to join the Planning team, located at our Edmonton office.  Reporting to the Western Canadian Community Engagement Lead, the Engagement Specialist/Junior Urban Planner will be responsible for assisting staff with various engagement and planning tasks such as but not limited to engagement design, community outreach, facilitation, writing, planning policy and regulation, current and long range planning.

A day in the life:

  • Perform professional work related to a variety of engagement, facilitation, and planning assignments
  • Present to a diverse range and size of audiences from the general public to various community/business/government groups
  • Provide professional planning services to the business, industry, government, stakeholders, and broader communities
  • Undertake a variety of tasks related to stakeholder and public engagement projects
  • Administer permitting/development applications under the guidance of senior planners
  • Research and develop policies for municipal development plans, secondary plans, and zoning by-laws
  • Planning policy and zoning interpretation/administration for municipal and land development clients
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and other business development activities 
  • Undertake research and analysis of various scenarios and formal presentation of analysis
  • Effectively communicate with provincial government agencies, municipalities, private industry, special interest groups, organizations and institutions
  • Conduct research and prepare various technical background documents to support various projects
  • Act as a liaison between clients and approving authorities; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

What you'll bring to WSP ...

  • A degree in Community Planning, Urban Planning, and / or related field
  • A full membership (RPP), or eligibility, of the Alberta Professional Planners Institute (APPI)
  • IAP2 training and membership would be considered an asset
  • One to three years of progressively responsible engagement and planning experience 
  • Experience designing, leading, and facilitating meetings, information sessions, workshops, would be considered and asset
  • Aptitude and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Analytical, creative, decision-making, and strategic skills and a proven ability to reach sound decisions and to resolve complex challenges, and,
  • Excellent time-management skills.
