Job Title: Asphalt Plant Operator
Job Location: Greater Edmonton Region
Reports to: Superintendent, Asphalt Plants
Summary
The Asphalt Plant Operator is responsible for the day-to-day operations of their designated asphalt plant facilities for the production and distribution of hot mix asphalt and other mix designs used in the construction and maintenance of roadways. The Asphalt Plant Operator is also responsible for the execution of the maintenance program of the plant equipment and facilities in order to keep the plant functioning safely and efficiently.
At least 5 years of prior plant operator experience required - experience with NASTEC Asphalt Plants and knowledge of Asphalt Plant processes, materials and equipment is considered an asset. Experience operating other equipment an asset. You will require to have Fall Arrest as well.
Candidates must complete relevant safety requirements and undergo/attend Pre-Employment Physical Health Assessment, Drug & Alcohol Testing, Orientation, and relevant Safety Training as scheduled by the Employer prior to commencing Employment (Candidate will be paid time for said activities once hiring process is completed).
Duties/Tasks
- Understand, promote, participate in, and continuously improve all aspects of the company safety programs & initiatives (including Goal Zero);
- Comply with all company safety policies and standards;
- Comply with all legislated environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations;
- Submit and/or review reports for safety meetings, hazard assessments and other safety processes as per OH&S legislation and/or company policy;
- Be responsible for the safe execution of tasks being performed by plant employees;
- Complete daily start-up inspections of plant facilities at the start of each shift, and lead plant employees in ongoing inspection, maintenance and repairs of the plant equipment;
- Test transfers, batchers and silos at the end of each shift;
- Operate plant/tower controls to manufacture asphalt mixes to proper specification, and to safely load haul trucks;
- Print and process load tickets and document daily productions;
- Enforce (and obey) speed limits on site(s);
- Maintain housekeeping and cleanliness of assigned plant tower(s);
- Communicate professionally and diplomatically with colleagues, supervisors, customers and guests at all times;
- Act as site contact and crew leader when Foreman and/or Superintendent are unavailable;
- Work closely with quality control personnel to continuously monitor the quality of the products;
- Work closely with customers and clients to ensure prompt service and satisfaction;
- Maintain the ‘parts list’ and ‘maintenance board’ for each designated plant facility;
- Ensure tools used for daily tasks remain clean and organized within their designated locations;
- Perform setup and takedown of plants at different job sites as required; and
- Additional duties/tasks as required.
Knowledge/Skills
- Must possess a strong mechanical aptitude, with direct work experience and sound knowledge of plant/conveyor systems.
- Must be fluent in English, with proficient written and oral communication skills.
- Must have a thorough knowledge of industry practices and regulations.
- Must have strong leadership skills, with the ability to build interpersonal relationships with colleagues and clients
- Must be able to work independently and as a team in a busy fast-paced environment.
- Must be computer literate and able to use Microsoft office computer software (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
- Must be able to complete basic mathematical calculations.
Experience/Education
- High school diploma (or equivalent) is required.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) is required.
- Experience in asphalt plant production and/or operations is required.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
Working Conditions
- Must be able to work irregular hours, including overtime, nights, and weekends as required.
- Must have own reliable transportation for frequent, short-notice travel between local job sites as required (within the greater Edmonton area).
- Infrequent, out-of-town travel may be required for mobile plant operations (with appropriate notice).
- A portion of work is performed outdoors, which could include inclement weather; fluctuations in temperatures and humidity; and varying exposures to noise, dust, grease, fumes, and toxic or flammable substances.
- Work in confined spaces may be required (with appropriate training as supplied by employer).
- Work at heights of up to 80 ft. is required (with appropriate fall protection and training as supplied by employer).
- Must be physically fit, with the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must wear appropriate PPE as directed by company policy and OH&S regulations.
- Must be able to meet all pre-employment safety requirements, including Occupational Health Assessment and Drug & Alcohol testing.
- Must be able to meet the requirements for Mask/Respirator Fit Testing.
- Must be willing to enroll and maintain an active membership with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Local 955.
