The Opportunity
The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety is seeking a Manager for the Safety Operations South Unit within the Occupational Health and Safety Branch, to manage a team of Occupational Health Officers who promote and enforce compliance with part 3 of The Saskatchewan Employment Act and The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020. Reporting to the Director of Safety Operations, the responsibilities for this position include:
- Managing the Safety Operations South unit which includes developing, promoting, implementing, and directing health and safety regulatory activities in provincial industries, thereby protecting Saskatchewan workers through the promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental, and social well-being;
- Providing leadership, technical support, mentoring and direction to Occupational Health and Safety Officers concerning the application of legislation, strategies, policies, activities, and programs to prevent occupational injury and illness within provincially regulated workplaces;
- Developing and advising the Director of policies and practices appropriate to the implementation of The Saskatchewan Employment Act and regulations;
- Representing the Branch in liaising, promoting, or speaking with labour groups, industry, regulators and government bodies through provincial and federal task forces and committees to ensure that the Saskatchewan occupational health and safety legislation and mandate is adequately addressed, and the health and safety of workers will not be compromised;
- Interpreting and executing regulatory orders to enforce the legislation through inspections, investigations, and prosecutions;
- Promoting the workplace responsibility system through presentations, special projects on select high-risk industry, and in-unit work plans and developing the same;
- Determining applications and interpretations of legislation on a provincial level to ensure fairness and uniformity and obtain consensus among officers and other OHS Units to maintain the credibility of the Branch with its stakeholders;
- Leading, supervising, and coaching a diverse group of professionals to advance workplace health and safety, enhance job performance, and further develop staff member’s skills; and
- Preparing and monitoring the unit’s budget, use of capital assets, and allocation of resources.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will bring knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, management, and leadership principles, have experience in a regulatory role, and possess superior communication skills.
Typically, the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be acquired through the completion of a degree/accreditation in Occupational Health and Safety supplemented with technical training, human resources knowledge and journeyperson status in one or more respective trades. This knowledge is in addition to extensive years of practical experience in supervising operational teams, and expertise in exercising the legislation.
