Fort Edmonton Management Company (FEMCo), the organization that operates Fort Edmonton Park, is looking for energetic and passionate individuals to join our team as a Pony Handler . Fort Edmonton Park takes you on an iconic journey through the city’s incredibly rich history. The Park offers visitors authentic and immersive experiences, as well as access to special events, live performances, private event rentals, and culinary delights. Fort Edmonton Management Company’s strategic direction is aimed at making the Park the premier cultural tourism attraction in Western Canada.

Under the direction of the Teamsters, the Pony Handler is primarily responsible for ensuring the day to day quality of care and handling of the ponies and other animals at Fort Edmonton Park. The Pony Handler provides daily care to the ponies, prep for the day and administers pony rides at Fort Edmonton Park. The Pony Handler also assists with the wagon rides, the day to day care of the other animals, departmental procedures and performs duties as assigned.

This position may be partially funded by Canada Summer Jobs grant funding and therefore must meet the Canada Summer Jobs eligibility criteria.

To be eligible, candidates must:
  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations

RESPONSIBILITIES:
General Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work with draft horses, light horses, ponies, oxen, cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry;
  • Operate and assist guests with the Fort Edmonton Park pony rides;
  • Ensure the general care of livestock and maintain their overall appearance in coordination with the team for to the general public at all times;
  • Maintain the stables are in a neat and clean manner;
  • Provide information to the general public regarding animal health, as well as accurate historical and site information on an on-going basis; and
  • Perform other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum 3 years’ riding experience;
  • Must be at least 16 years of age;
  • Experience working with other farm animals a considered an asset;
  • Well-developed communication skills;
  • Must be able work independently as well as in a team setting; and
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Must meet qualifications for Canada Summer Jobs Grant as outlined above

OTHER DETAILS:
  • Up to 35 hours per week. Hours of work are between 7:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m., Sunday to Saturday. Ability to work evenings and weekends is required.
  • This position operates entirely on site. Employees must be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions, with frequent walking, standing, moderate up and down stairs and across distances between buildings;
  • Required to lift up to 50lbs on a regular basis;
  • Exposure to or in contact with common allergens such as but not limited to hay, straw, fur, pollen, dust, peanuts/nuts, bee/wasp stings, fog, latex while on site;
  • May be exposed to chemicals, strong scents, outdoor elements, noise, temperature etc;
  • Working in a busy site environment with frequent interruptions;
  • Must arrange own transportation as this position often operates outside of regular public transit hours;
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada for any employer;
  • Media consent form required in accordance with FEMCo policy as this role may participate in media events as required; and
  • Original Police Information Check issued within the past 90 days that is satisfactory to the employer before starting in the position.

JOB TYPE: Seasonal/Casual
SALARY: $16.00/hr
