About you
Based in our Geraldton office and reporting to the Editor of the Geraldton Guardian and Midwest Times, the opportunity is open for either a graduate journalist with a university degree looking to launch their career OR an experienced reporter considering a sea change and keen to take on a new and exciting challenge.
The role will have you covering a range of news in a region rich in potential for breaking and telling important yarns and honing your craft on the Geraldton Guardian, which publishes Tuesday and Friday each week, and the free Midwest Times paper out every Wednesday, as well as across our digital platforms.
An experienced candidate (ideally with at least 1-3 years of experience) would be considered for a possible leadership role within the newsroom, which would include extra responsibilities.

About the Role
Essential to the role are strong writing and communication skills, a nose for sniffing out news, and a talent for hard work and teamwork. The successful applicant must be highly motivated and bring a positive attitude to the team. You will be required to cover a wide range of rounds, from hard news to community-driven stories, possibly even sport. You must be confident in taking photographs and filing news for our online platforms. The ideal candidate will have tertiary qualifications in journalism or a similar field and will partake in tasks such as:
• Gathering and writing original news stories for publication in print and online platforms;
• Developing positive relationships with key people and organisations;
• Breaking news stories and creating engaging content;
• Contributing to news planning meetings and liaising with the Editor regarding story development;
• Interviewing and photographing subjects confidently and professionally; and
• Representing the Company in a professional and courteous manner.
